Matthew and I got all packed up. Went down to the reception to check out with all of our bags. I paid first and then a call came in.
"24 hour delay"
Head back to the room with bags and time to get some work done.
Hurry up and wait, hurry up and wait. This is the life of an Antarctic researcher.

Sorry you’re delayed, but glad they’re waiting until safe to fly in. Fingers crossed for tomorrow!
ReplyDeleteRandom question: why do Antarctic trips start from New Zealand instead of South America? Seems like South America is closer to the continent.
ReplyDeleteHi Andy! Love the posts so far! Can you tell us more about why you are going to Antarctica? What kind of research you are doing? I hope you travel tomorrow. Anne Tobin
ReplyDeleteI will answer Egaal since Andy is en route and likely won't be able to for a while.
ReplyDeleteWhile South America may be closer to one part of Antarctica, if you look at the location of McMurdo Station, that's actually closer to New Zealand. Keep in mind, Antarctica is almost 2 times the size of the continental United States, so it's like saying "you were close to Florida, so why didn't you travel through the Caribbean" when you're trying to go to Alaska. :)
